Preparation Before Your English College Class

>> Tuesday, December 14, 2010

English Composition is one of those core classes that's going to be a component of any college education. Many students dread the thought of a composition class, and feel like they're set up to fail. However, being prepared for this class will instead set you up for success and an almost guaranteed passing grade!

Part of the reason why many students feel intimidated by English Comp is because the ideas seem so fluid. They wonder what sort of assignments they'll be receiving throughout the semester. They worry that composing their thoughts and opinions on paper, or that drawing conclusions from reading literature, is too vague of an assignment to really be undertaken.

Yes, English and Composition are very vast subjects, and a professor can make almost any type of curriculum out of the topics. However, students can rest assured that they will spend much of their time in English Comp reading and writing. No matter what form these two activities take, students can feel confident that they will be a part of the learning experience.

With the fast paced world of technology around us, it seems like the role of the extended piece of writing is quickly disappearing. Students are often more comfortable with short pieces to read, feeling overwhelmed by literature and novels. That's something you can work towards: being a strong and confidant reader no matter what the length of the piece you're dealing with.

One of the best ways to become more comfortable with reading is, unsurprisingly, taking the time to read. Work your way away from magazines and newspapers, and take the time to pick up a book at your local library. Studies have shown that human beings acquire spelling and reading comprehension skills by the act of reading regularly. If you set a goal for yourself - say, read one book a month - you will find that your ability to finish that book and analyze its contents will improve incredibly, maybe even after finishing just one book.

The other integral skill for an English Composition class is the ability to write. You're going to spend lots of time in English Composition forming your thoughts and opinions into legible pieces of writing that accurately convey the way you feel and think to your classmates and professor.

Just like with reading, one of the best ways to practice composition is by writing regularly. Purchase a notebook especially for yourself and make a promise to write every night, even if it's only a page.
